Celebrating Small Business Month: Enniskillen General Store
Even on cool October days, you’ll still find families lining up for ice cream at the Enniskillen General Store — a community landmark with a story that stretches back to 1840. What started as a small country shop and post office in Enniskillen, Ontario, has grown into a destination where people gather, celebrate, and create memories.
Since 2014, the Sheehan family has carried on the store’s proud tradition while steadily expanding to five locations across Bowmanville, Enniskillen, Oshawa, Courtice, and Peterborough, now employing close to 90 people. While ice cream remains the star attraction, the shelves offer much more. Shoppers can pick up fresh milk and cheese from local producers, browse handmade goods, or discover a rotating lineup of seasonal favorites. The store has also adapted to modern demand, adding everyday essentials like electronic accessories, toys, and apparel, making Enniskillen a one-stop destination for both nostalgic indulgences and practical must-haves.
What truly sets Enniskillen apart is its heart for community. From sponsoring festivals to donating full days of sales for local causes — most recently to support neighbors after a devastating fire — the store continues to give back in meaningful ways.
This Small Business Month, Enniskillen General Store is a reminder that independent businesses do more than sell products. They shape communities, create opportunities, and bring people together — one scoop at a time.
